“[…]Although this metaphorical depiction shows the basic mechanism of the development of the ego, the reality is much more complex. This is because the true self is by no means limited to just one point of perception. In fact, it can maintain any number of points of perception simultaneously, which together then form the perception of the ego. The ego thus obtains a more complex picture of the phenomena that are ‘outside’ it. At the same time, it creates a more complex self-image, which consists, figuratively speaking, of several superimposed flames. A more complex self-image is desirable for the ego, because it lessens its fear of extinction. What is nowadays called ‘risk minimization by diversification’ is therefore an age-old hat.
The insight that an ego is based on many points of perception simultaneously leads us to a conclusion that is difficult for a human to intuitively accept:
The points of perception of an ego are not spatially bound. Rather, they are
scattered throughout consciousness-space.”
