The Story of the Dreaming Fingertip

“I talked about consciousness stretching, and that’s precisely what we want to do now. Let’s first go through an interesting thought experiment in preparation. To do this, feel the tip of your right index finger. Just the tip. Feel that it exists. Feel how it perceives the ambient temperature. Now touch something with your fingertip and feel the touch. Tap an object a little with your fingertip. Take your time and become this fingertip.

Now, imagine that you fall asleep and start dreaming. In this dream, you experience yourself as the fingertip. In fact, you forget everything that constituted you as a human. You simply exist as a fingertip. So, you live for the day, feel warmth and cold, and every so often you tap along. But at some point, you realize that your life doesn’t feel right. Something seems to be missing. This feeling stays with you, and your life with its constant repetitions becomes more and more unbearable. One day, you are so desperate that you scream inwardly: “Enough is enough!”

And as if by magic, a crystal fingertip with wings and exceptionally cool sunglasses comes along. It tells you that you are only dreaming. It speaks of the greater reality, and raves about true nail polish, which simply doesn’t exist in your dream. Then it begins to gradually stretch your beliefs. After many years, the time has come. It asks you to open up completely and feel what you really are.

So, you open up. You realize that the fingertip you thought you were is just the end of a finger. Well, a finger is like a long fingertip with joints, right? You can still grasp that. But what is this hand? And then there are four other fingers and fingertips on this hand. Are they like your cousins? They exist at the same time as you, they are somehow connected to you and even experience the world just like you do, yet you don’t know them! And then there are the arms, legs, and toes. Toes? That must be a different species. And then the upper body, the organs, eyes, ears, and all the hair.

At some point, you give up. It’s just too huge. After all, you don’t want to go crazy! Sure, you have screamed “Enough is enough,” but does that mean it has to get so surreal? So, you tell the winged crystal fingertip that you have had enough of enough is enough. After all, you are now awake, and embodied, and the like, at least you believe so, and anyway, it’s time to tap out a hot rhythm again. A little fun as a distraction is allowed, right?

Whereupon the winged crystal fingertip removes its exceptionally cool sunglasses, takes a deep look into your non-existing eyes, and says: ‘Always at your service, dear friend. The seeds have been sown.'”
